The Institute for Pedagogy in the Liberal Arts (IPLA) was created as a series of two-day sessions that offer participants the opportunity to work with experts and scholars in a variety of pedagogical contexts. Whether developing a new approach for a course or reflecting upon current pedagogies, participants will be working in a variety of ways with scholars from various places. Historically, the IPLA is held on the Oxford College campus and begins the day after graduation so as to accommodate as many faculty as possible.
The IPLA is hosted by The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) of Oxford College of Emory University and Emory University’s Center for Faculty Development and Excellence (CFDE).
IPLA 2010 (May 11-14) offers a pair of two-day sessions
On the first two-day session, Tuesday and Wednesday, we have arranged for these programs: (Select ONE)
•Larry Michaelsen will facilitate a TBL session. (Michaelsen is the originator of a pedagogy for larger classes, called Team Based Learning which does not involve ‘teams’ per se. For more about the concept and its features, please see www.teambasedlearning.org)
•Florian Pohl and Paul Oser will facilitate an Inquiry session for course and syllabi development. These sessions will be open to faculty from across Emory University and beyond. As Oxford develops its new GEP and other areas of the university explore Inquiry-driven pedagogy as well, this session will give faculty a good block of time to reflect, write, and share ideas about Inquiry.
•The IT team will facilitate Blended Learning: Teaching with Technology. Each year, IT develops a topnotch program within an academic context and with a hands on approach.
On the second two-day session, Thursday and Friday, we offer the following three programs: (Select ONE)
• Ken Bain (author of What the Best College Professors Do, winner of the Virginia and Warren Stone Prize for an Outstanding Book on Education in 2004), will lead a two day workshop/discussion on best practices and how they might reshape what we do in our classes. Bain is VP of Teaching and Learning at Montclair State)
•Jeff Galle and Stacy Bell will facilitate the second Inquiry session for faculty across the university who are developing new courses or revising existing ones.
•The IT team will facilitate the traditional second session of Blended Learning: Teaching with Technology. Each year, IT develops a topnotch program within an academic context and with a hands on approach.

IPLA 2010 gives all participants the opportunity to work in small groups, and each session has been selected and designed to meet an expressed need of faculty. This year sessions offer opportunities to study pedagogies for larger classes, to develop Inquiry courses, to study best practices across the disciplines, and to apply new technologies to the teaching and learning environment. And as a bonus, a $500 stipend in faculty development funds is given to each participant. So, whether you’ve attended previous Institutes or are considering attending your first time, please know you are welcome to become a central part of this year’s program.
Dates for IPLA 2011 to be announced soon.
