The Center for Faculty Development and Excellence (CFDE) and the Religion and Public Health Collaborative (RPHC) announce the continuation of the RPHC Interdisciplinary Seminar for 2010-11. The seminar is one of several CFDE interdisciplinary university seminars that bring together researchers and scholars from across the university. The Religion and Public Health Collaborative joins Emory’s strong researchers and scholars in public health, theology, religious studies, nursing, medicine, and the social sciences to engage in dialogue on the intersections of religion and public health. In 2009-2010 the seminar focused on the public health implications of the practices of the world’s religions, and the role of religion in the formation of social institutions that protect public health and care for the sick. Emory University is a uniquely rich environment for such a conversation. Continuing seminar participants include humanists, scientists, social scientists, and clinical researchers. New faculty in any discipline are encouraged to join us.
The 2010-2011 seminar will take a more formal structure. Participants will collaborate on chapters for an edited volume on religion as a social determinant of health. Continuing and new participants will draft and present manuscripts for discussion. Faculty are also welcome to participate simply as discussants. Plans for the volume are already underway but new ideas are welcome.

Faculty members who would be interested in participating in the 2010-2011 book project should apply. Please tell us a little about your work and how it relates to the topic of religion and public health. There are a limited number of spaces available but we will attempt to include new members as space is available. Not all participants will have writing responsibilities; faculty are welcome to join in the discussion and provide feedback to others as the project develops.
