Author Development

Welcome to the Author Development Program

*Are you working on your first book?  Or writing for a new audience?

*Would you like help in crafting a book proposal or query letter?  Or in selecting publishers to approach?

*Would you like feedback on a draft of a chapter or your book manuscript?

*Do you wonder if you need an agent and how to find one?

*Would you like someone to come speak to your department or unit on a topic particular topic related to academic writing and publishing?

Emory’s Author Development Program, housed in the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, helps professors with all these issues and more. Our mission is to support the development of faculty members as authors in the changing landscape of academic publishing today. Any full-time faculty member in any of Emory’s nine schools can schedule a consultation on writing and publishing issues simply by contacting one of the program’s editors.

In addition to working one-on-one with faculty authors, we sponsor colloquia and workshops on a wide range of topics in publishing. Departments or other groups on campus may also request a talk tailored to their interests. Past workshops have ranged from topics related to trends in scholarly publishing and digital media to time management for productive writing. We will also be happy to give hour-long workshops for groups on topics like how to craft an effective query letter or editing principles to better engage readers and clarify argument. Call or email Amy Benson Brown (abrow01@emory.edu) to request a workshop or talk for your unit.

Each spring, we also bring an editor or literary agent to campus to meet with faculty authors.  Last year’s “Meet the Editor” event feature Executive Editor of Cornell University Press, Peter Potter, who addressed changes in humanities and social science publishing.  Check back for more information on spring 2011’s event which is slated to spotlight writing and publishing in the sciences. Contact Elizabeth Gallu (egallu@emory.edu) for more information about that series.

Other on-going initiatives include Creativity One-on-One and a Book Manuscript Conference Award.  Creativity One-on-One offers coaching in creative writing for academic authors wishing to stretch stylistically and address broader audiences. The other initiative provides funding for a conference focused on the critique of a book manuscript by a junior faculty member.

For more information or to set up an individual writing consultation, just email or call Program Director Amy Benson Brown (at abrow01@emory.edu, 404-727-5796) or Associate Director of Programs Elizabeth Gallu (at egallu@emory.edu, 404-727-6692) . Generally, our schedules allow us to meet with writers within a few weeks of a request.  We encourage authors who would like feedback on a chapter or a whole book manuscript to let us know as soon as possible in the academic year, so that we can arrange to provide timely feedback.

Our campus address is Room 5208 in the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, located in 1599 Clifton Road  (Mailstop 1599-001-1BI, Emory University, Atlanta, 30322).
