Emory’s Author Development Program, housed in the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, helps professors with all these issues and more. Our mission is to support the development of faculty members as authors in the changing landscape of academic publishing today. Any full-time faculty member in any of Emory’s nine schools can call an editor to schedule a consultation on writing and publishing issues.

In addition to working one-on-one with faculty authors, we sponsor colloquia and workshops on a wide range of topics in publishing and occasionally bring editors and agents to campus. Recent workshop topics have ranged from revising the dissertation into a book, to negotiating book contracts and the art of crafting book proposals. View our Events page for a preview of upcoming events and programs, including “Writing for Advocacy” and “Writing for Digital Mediums.”
This fall, we are pleased to announce two new initiatives, Creativity One-on-One and a Book Manuscript Conference Award. The first initiative is for academic authors wishing to stretch stylistically and address broader audiences. The second initiative provides funding for a conference focused on the critique of a book manuscript by a junior faculty member.
Setting up an appointment for a consultation is simple. Just email or call Program Director Amy Benson Brown (at abrow01@emory.edu, 404-727-5796) or Associate Director of Programs Elizabeth Gallu (at egallu@emory.edu, 404-727-6692) to find a time to talk. Generally, our schedules allow us to meet with writers within a few weeks of a request. We encourage authors who would like feedback on a chapter or a whole book manuscript to let us know as soon as possible in the academic year, so that we can arrange to provide timely feedback.
Our campus address is Room 5208 in the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, located in 1599 Clifton Road (Mailstop 1599-001-1BI, Emory University, Atlanta, 30322).
